Album Review: Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds, Chasing Yesterday
Noel Gallagher is a craftsman. Chasing Yesterday, his second solo album, doesn’t stray too far from the ‘60s brit pop and breezy ‘70s rock that fans of Oasis are used to. And that isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Although it is less hook-y than his former band’s heyday it is still filled with trippy, mostly laid back gems. It’s amazing how he’s still able to re-create the ethereal Oasis sound, complete with layers of acoustic guitars, harmonies, echo-laden electric leads, keyboards, and the occasional saxophone. My only complaint is that the songs meander a bit at times. Key tracks: “Lock All the Doors,” “Right Stuff,” “The Mexican,” “Ballad of the Mighty I.”
Reunited and it feels so good
It takes a peculiar sort to appreciate Meatloaf as much as I do (yes, the singer and the food). In short, these are my people.
It was announced recently that the Loaf is reuniting with Bat out of Hell and Bat out of Hell II collaborator Jim Steinman for another album that’ll be released this fall. Unfortunately there’s no radio outlet for their new stuff no matter how good it’ll be, but I’m confident that the creators of “Paradise by the Dashboard Light,” “I’d Do Anything for Love (But I Won’t Do That),” “You Took the Words Right out of My Mouth,” “Objects in the Rearview Mirror May Appear Closer Than They Are,” and countless other classics will deliver something worthwhile.

Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds are named after the old English folk song “High Flying Bird.” Neil Young covered it on his 2012 album of fuzzed out folk classics with Crazy Horse, Americana. It’s not a highlight from the album, though, and there’s no good video for it. In its stead here’s the haunting promo for another track on the album, his far-out version of elementary school singalong “Oh Susanna.”
