A week of our new #AlbumTracks feature continues with Muddy Waters and Waylon Jennings.
I Just Want to Make Love to You – Muddy Waters
from the 1968 LP Electric Mud
Muddy Waters 1968 psychedelic blues album Electric Mud album is equally hated and revered. Pure blues fans, and Muddy himself, practically saw it as a degradation of the blues as a genre. On the other hand, Public Enemy's Chuck D considers it a main influence. It might have been a gimmick, but its wildness can ardly be contained, and its insane guitar work often reaches Hendrix heights.
It's not really psychedelic as much as it is heavy, raunchy '60s blues rock. There are no weird sounds or sitars. It's all heavy hitting guitar and hypnotic organ. Muddy's voice often gets buried in the wall of sound, which is a shame, but his forced belting is sometimes magical.
The completely re-worked “I Just Want To Make Love to You” is built on a reckless, disconcerting groove. The wig out at the end is straight up Jimi Hendrix Experience.
Waymore's Blues – Waylon Jennings
from the 1972 LP Dreaming in My Dreams
If you wanna get to heaven, gotta D-I-E
you gotta put on your coat and T-I-E
Wanna get the rabbit out of the L-O-G
You gotta make a commotion* like D-O-G
Like D-O-G, like D-O-G, yeah.
Dig that wordplay, man. Jennings is at his laid back best here, his swagger off the charts.
* Most lyrics sites online say that this line is "You gotta make a cold motion like a D-O-G" but that's stupid so I put what is cooler, makes more sense, and sounds like what he's saying.
