The Twins make a big move, a noteworthy anniversary for an ex-Twin, and the birthday of a country legend.
A shot in the arm
The Twins have been struggling since their meteoric month of May. The good news: their pitching is still holding up, both starters and bullpen guys performing much better than anticipated. The bad news: their bats have gone completely silent. Getting timely hits came easy for the Twins in May, something I haven’t seen…well, maybe ever. The well for that has dried up. Mauer, Plouffe, and Hunter have each cooled down.
It is a good time, then, to call up Byron Buxton, the highest ranked prospect in baseball. When the Twins made the announcement yesterday I was still surprised, as it usually takes them a lot longer to realize that they need to make a move like this. He’s bound to be a little rough, especially facing major league hitting for the first time, but I’m sure that his presence in the lineup and on the field will boost morale and help the team to perform better.
Twins bit, or Twit
While we’re on the Twins tip, on this day in 2001 future Twin Louis Castillo hit safely in his 30th consecutive game while with the Marlins. He was only the 39th player to have that long of a hitting streak. Castillo was a sneaky talent, great with the glove at second base and a consistent .300 hitter in his prime.
