Bill Nye (famous for the popular PBS Show Bill Nye The Science Guy) talks a lot about evolution. That's fine with me, even as a Christian. I, as most educated Christians, believe that evolution is probably true. I think he could be less of a jerk about it, but then again, he's dealing with a lot of jerk Christians as well.
One thing I've always wondered: where does his authority come from? In the media and on social media he's referred to as a "scientist." You'd also figure he at least has a degree in biology if he's so sure about the "undeniable" claims of evolution, right? Or at least a Master's Degree in some science?
Well, the answer is no. He has a bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering. I'm not saying that this necessarily makes him less trustworthy when he's talking about science (although, well, it sort of does). It's just interesting that such a pop culture authority on "science" isn't really a scientist. At least Richard Dawkins is a legit biologist.
When it comes to their pop culture stuff, though, especially their many contributions to fad atheism, they are not scientists. They are scientism-ists who promulgate the false dichotomy between science and religion that is anti-history, anti-philosophy, and just plain ignorant. Ironically, as ignorant as the Christians they are combating and think they're better than.
