Finishing up this first full week of April by highlighting three forgotten album tracks from the Beatles’ often overlooked solo catalog.
Going Down on Love – John Lennon from the 1974 LP Walls and Bridges
The leadoff track from Lennon’s seemingly forgotten Walls and Bridges is one of his most fun songs (and also one of his funkiest). Includes a great minor key melody in the chorus and quirky reference to “Help!” in the middle section. The interplay between the guitar riff, bongos, and drums give the song a solid foundation.

If Walls and Bridges is forgotten then Harrison’s Gone Troppo is downright maligned. It flopped upon its initial release and is universally looked down by critics. Both are unfortunate because it has some of the strongest songwriting of George's post-All Things Must Pass career (filled with uncharacteristic hooks and catchy melodies). “Wake Up My Love” is lovingly drenched in synths but that’s why it’s so fun and unique.

The ‘80s weren’t fertile ground for solo Beatles material. Ringo’s 1983 collection Old Wave wasn’t even released in America (which is a shame because the Joe Walsh produced album is actually pretty good). He returned to the scene in 1992 with another solid effort, Time Takes Time, and “Golden Blunders” is its best deep track. Originally performed by alternative band the Posies, its jangly, Beatles/Byrds flavor fits Ringo’s voice and demeanor so well that you’d think it was written for him.
